Cliff Terrace in her prime circa. 1900




Thanks to a secret admirer, we get to see how 14-15 Cliff Terrace looked in her prime in this original postcard. The postcard is from 1900 and shows the ground floor as a pastry cook and confectioner shop. Next door at 13 and 12 are clearly high quality shops at the same period. Which adds to the argument that they have enough historical history as shops for them to remain so.

    Work underway on empty eyesore
    Work is underway on a property in Cliftonville that’s been an empty eyesore for almost a decade, after intervention from Thanet District Council.



    Cabinet Members agreed in July 2006 to take compulsory purchase action on the group of buildings at 12 – 15 Cliff Terrace, opposite the Lido, using funding from the “No Use Empty” campaign, which brings together Thanet, Dover, Shepway and Swale District Councils with Kent County Council. This partnership seeks to enhance the Empty Properties Strategies already in place within the Districts and bring additional resources forward to tackle the problem of long-term empty properties.



    Following this, the owner was informed of the council’s decision. He was advised that the required work could be carried out by him immediately or the building could be sold to a developer with an agreed programme of works. If neither happened, the property would be compulsorily purchased.



    The owner decided to work with the council and chose to sell the property to a developer. A planning application was submitted in July 2007 to convert the properties, which were former shop units on the ground floor with accommodation above them, into flats.



    Planning consent was granted, but the council learnt that the landmark corner element of the building had, in the meantime, been listed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. A separate listed building application then had to be submitted for the proposed work, which was approved just before Christmas 2007.



    Cllr. Zita Wiltshire, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “It’s wonderful to see work finally underway on this landmark property. It’s a beautiful building with unique curved glazed windows and there was a risk that, had the council not taken action, the building would simply have continued to deteriorate, possibly to a point where it was beyond repair. We’re delighted that the complex issues surrounding the transfer and development of the site have now finally been resolved and work is now underway on site to bring this fine group of buildings back into use. We look forward to seeing them being transformed from an eyesore into a real asset for the whole area.”

    Also in the paper it states that the Cliff Terrance had TDC and KCC funding to do what they are doing to it!!!!
